Abstract

This study examined the use of podcasts to improve English language learning in Myanmar, addressing key questions about the current state of English education, the contexts in which podcasts are used, how Myanmar influences podcast adoption, challenges in their use, and the implications for Philippine educators. A literature review was employed as the primary method, synthesizing existing research, reports, and scholarly articles related to English learning in Myanmar, podcast-based learning, and socio-political factors shaping educational practices. English language learning in Myanmar has been influenced by historical, socio-political, and economic factors, including colonial legacies and post-independence efforts to promote the Burmese language. The reintroduction of English faces challenges such as political tensions, ethnic diversity, and socio-economic disparities that affect access to quality education. Despite these challenges, digital tools like podcasts have become crucial in language learning, offering flexible, accessible resources. Podcasts such as Daily English in Burmese and SBS Learn English Burmese provide lessons, while youth-driven platforms like Doh Zat and Myanmar in a PodShell enable young people to engage with global topics in English. These podcasts contribute to language fluency and promote critical thinking. However, challenges such as limited internet access, digital literacy, content relevance, and political instability hinder their full potential. Myanmar’s experience with podcasts offers valuable lessons for the Philippines, where similar challenges exist, particularly in remote areas with limited educational resources.
